Jon Tester was born in Havre, Montan in 1956. His father was of English descent. On the other hand, his mother was of Swedish ancestry. He graduated from the University of Providence and the college of Great Falls with a BA degree in music.
He then worked for two years as a music teacher at the Big Sandy School. After working as a teacher, he returns to his family’s farm and custom butcher shop. Tester then spent 5 years as chairman of the Big Sandy School Board of Trustees.
He was also on the Big Sandy Soil Conservation Service (SCS) Committee and the Chouteau County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) Committee.
In the year 1998, Tester was elected to represent the 45th district in the Montana Senate. In November 2006, Tester defeated Conrad Burns to get the US Senate seat. He then won reelection in 2012 against US Representative Denny Rehberg, and in 2018 against Montana State Auditor Matt Rosendale.
